Get those lenses focused – microadjustment tools

I’m kind of a stickler for sharp images, so when I learned that I could adjust my lenses to optimum focus, I was all over it. When you buy a lens, you can look at sample images, but you’re never sure how exact your copy will actually be. Some manufacturers are more consistent than others, so I just invested in a body with microadjustment (D700). To my knowledge, all Canon bodies 50D and up, and Nikon bodies, D300 and up have this ability (Nikon D300, D700, D3, D3x, and D3S. In canon this feature is available in Canon 50d, Canon 5d mark II and also in 1 DS & 1D mark III) Here are some steps to make sure your lens focus is right on.

AF MICRO-ADJUSTMENT:

This focus adjustment works really well for fast primes and low aperture lenses. I find that it’s works ok on 2.8 lenses, but works great on 1.2 and 1.4 primes! After you have the gist of this test, click on the pics below to enlarge them on your screen. You can download them to your PC/Mac or view them right here on our website to run this test. Either way, be sure you focus on the image on your computer monitor. Be sure the images are at 100% and aren’t compressed to fit your screen. I prefer to use the LIVE View feature on my camera, but you can look through the viewfinder as well. The process uses Moire interference patterns produced by these images when they are in focus so you have a good idea of when they are in really nice focus.

Microadjustment pattern by Chavvon & Larissa Dallas Wedding Photographers

1.) Take your camera and place it on a tripod in front of your computer monitor. I find this works best at about 1.5 times your minimum focus distance. If your lens has a minimum focus distance of 2 ft, place your camera about 3 feet away from the monitor. Be sure your camera is at the same level and your lens is parallel to the computer screen: screen| <<3 feet>> |camera

2.) Once you’re all setup, click on the image above to enlarge it (be sure they’re at 100%!). Place your camera in aperture priority at the lenses minimum aperture and also set the camera to manual focus mode with a single focus point.  Place the single focus point on the center of the pattern and manually focus until the main center pattern is in perfect focus. You should see multiple outward rings disappear into the outer edges. Take your time and see what the pattern looks like when it is out of focus. The center rings should just pop! Now, once the image is in perfect focus, look at the focus distance on your lens and take note of what it’s set at.

3.) Now leaving everything untouched, move your camera to auto focus. Press the auto focus button and see what your camera does. If auto-focus doesn’t move and it stays in the exact same place, your lens and camera are in perfect focus and you don’t need to touch microadjustment!

4.) If your camera/lens does move, you now see a different focus distance, and the image is no longer razor sharp, you have a little work to do. Be thankful for micro-adjustment!

5.) Go to your Nikon set-up menu to access AF fine tune or use Custom Fn. III on your Canon to access AF microadjustment. The camera will remember which lens had which adjustments. If the focus distance moved clockwise, use “-” adjustments and if it moved counter-clockwise dial in “+”. Keep changing the AF adjustment until the focus distance is the same as your manual focus (assuming you can see something when it’s in focus!!). After you are done save the setting for this lens. You have to press the OK button on Nikon and the info button on Canon, otherwise none of your settings will be saved.

If your lens is 2.8 or over, this test won’t be so helpful! No more blurry images!!

Winter Wonderland (Part 2)

So on Christmas we had a wonderful time playing in the snow.  If it snows once a year in Dallas, we consider it a blessing!  Not only has it snown again (is that a word), it snowed 10 inches in one day!  That’s a record for the Dallas area.  By this time of year, it’s usually in the 60s or 70s (which I would love) but it’s freezing outside!

The kids love it so we went out with our little ones and our wonderful neighbors that we adore so much. (Come home Dan….come home!!)  We played in the snow for a few hours and just had a good time.  After it was all over, we came inside to enjoy a nice cup of William Sonoma hot chocolate.  I love it!

Happy Valentines Day! Cookies Anyone?

Making cookies with the kids. Chavvon and Larissa Photograhy Dallas Texas Wedding Photograhers
Quite a few years ago, Chavvon went and bought a very expensive camera and lens, and I remember how irritated I was! Yeah, I don’t know if I will ever be able to live that one down!!  Ha Ha! I remember him stating his case on how he really wanted to capture those cute images of our kiddos, capturing expressions, moments, and memories. They truly inspired him to tap into a creative side that was hidden. After seeing his pictures, I was really impressed, but also wanted to learn about it myself! To our surprise, others were impressed also, and people began asking “How much do you charge?” What a blessing! This hobby that we loved to do on the side was something people would pay us to do. Wow, that is all I can say, what a blessing.

This post is just a little tribute to the casual family photography that we love, of the kids we love, and doing what we love the most…. just playing with our babies!!! Thankfully, because of them and our desire to remember their lives, we get to do what we really enjoy!

Every year we make and decorate Valentines Day cookies! Yummmm!! This is really fun and really messy!! Here is a glimpse into our home.

First you must make and decorate the cookies… We always buy extra cookie dough, it seems to disappear for some reason!!  ;)

“Jaenin, let’s get de wittle weeper to cween dee table. Wook Jaenin!” – Brice (He didn’t know that while very efficient, it is soooo NASTY!!!) “Brice, you are doing so good, but that is dirty, let’s do that on the floor!!” – Mommy.

Kim + James…real troopers!

Sometimes when you meet two people, you can just tell how in love they are. James and Kim are those people. The way they talk, look at each other, and hold hands just gushes with love! Larissa and I had a wonderful time at this photoshoot even though it was cold!! The photos don’t show because these two are real troopers…. About half way through the shoot, we had to stop for hot chocolate just to warm up! My fingers were so cold that I could hardly press the shutter button, so it was a welcomed resting spot for us as well.

We took a nice variety of shots in the city and at a nice little garden we have nearby, so we’re excited to show off these pics!

A few new books for weddings! – Dallas Wedding Photography

We really enjoy looking at pictures on the computer and various websites, but nothing is like seeing your work in actual print. It’s like all the hard work comes to life when you see an album, a 16×20 or any other high quality print in person. The colors, the clarity….ahhhh, it’s like an addiction! I hate giving away stuff to clients! I wish I could keep it all!

We wanted to offer our clients a few more albums and design a mini book to give away to prospective clients, so here you go! The albums are our lower end coffee table book and the small book is a just a little something to show off our work to prospective clients.

So, what do you think? – Dallas Wedding Photography

I love black and white images, but I have a hard time taking our beautiful, vibrant, color pictures and making them black and white. So…that got me to thinking.  Maybe I just haven’t spent enough time coming up with a black and white process to take advantage of the colors and contrast in the color pictures I love so much!

I spent the last few days playing around with black & white conversions.  High contrast, noisy, bright, dark, you name it! After all that, this is my favorite that I settled on.  Like it?

Can we PLEASE call this little boy pretty!!!

We know he is a little boy, but my goodness, HE IS JUST SO PRETTY!!! His eyes, his little lips, everything about this baby boy is just beautiful!! His mom and dad, Ashley and Mark, wanted to enter him into a “Most Beautiful Baby Contest”, so they need some pictures to register. Ashley and Mark are dear friends of ours, so maybe we are biased, but isn’t he gorgeous! Go vote for him when it comes up! We will post a link for everyone to go and vote when we get the information!

Adorable Linen Bridal Book – Dallas Wedding Photography

This book is so perfect for bridal portraits, or a book for your child’s portraits!  We are updating our samples with current work that we have recently done, and we filled this one with a variety of bridals that we have done recently.  The linen cover makes this book slightly more casual, but you can still feel the quality of how it is made. Very nice!!

Here are some facts for you…

Covers

Book covers are made with masonite to give the books a smooth, substantial feel. Eight cover material options are available including black, chocolate brown and tan linen fabric; black, dark brown and dark red leather; and a custom printed photo cover in lustre or metallic. Photo covers are made with a photographic print that is laminated and adhered to the masonite cover. The photo cover allows for complete customization on the front, spine, and back of the book using your own images and designs. Additionally, enhance the cover of your book with a photographic dust jacket or cover foil stamping. A dust jacket is a photographic print laminated and creased to wrap around the cover of the book. It protects the cover and provides another option to personalize your book by using images, text and graphics. Cover foil stamping allows you to place three lines of text on the front cover in one of three places: the center of the book, the lower right corner, or the bottom center. Foil stamping is only available on leather covers.

Papers

Press printed books are printed with the same HP Indigo printing technology with liquid inks. Book pages are printed on 110# hinged paper in semi-gloss or pearl. The hinged paper allows open pages to lay flat a as well as provides a thicker, more upscale paper option. Hinged paper can also be UV coated for added protection and a glossy look and feel. Book pages are stitched together to create the book block that is adhered to the cover using black cardstock end sheets.

Here are some pictures of the album we just got in!  You can see how the pages lay flat, they are stiff and firm, and the difference in the cover material compared to the others.
